How Freedom Honor Flight Helps Veterans

17 Dec

A former United States Marine, Shane Stodghill maintains ties to his military service by contributing to a number of nonprofit organizations dedicated to veterans, including Freedom Honor Flight.

Based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Freedom Honor Flight was founded in 2008 with the sole purpose of flying veterans out to Washington, DC, to see the war memorials erected in their honor. Priority is given to veterans of World War II and veterans with terminal illness, though all former service members are encouraged to apply. The trip lasts a whole day and veterans spend time at the World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, the Marine Corps War Memorial, and more depending on time. Veterans are accompanied by trained volunteers who spend the whole day with them.

Representative Chris Turner Supports Key Veterans Legislation

31 Oct

Working toward a BA in the field of government, Shane Stodghill complements his studies by serving as a legislative aide for Texas House Representative Chris Turner. Shane Stodghill researches veteran-related materials and oversees files and correspondence for the busy legislator.

In the last session of the house, Texas State Representative Chris Turner participated in the activities of the Veteran’s Caucus and was designated the chair of the caucus in the house. Turner has sponsored legislation for a variety of agendas in the Texas house. These areas include tenant protections, waterway safety, safeguarding children, and assisting the veteran population of the state.

Regarding veterans, Turner has shown his dedication to the men and women who have served in the armed forces by supporting two bills that will make the transition from military duty to civilian employment much faster and easier. One veteran-related bill that Turner saw ratified permits voters to cast ballots regarding legislation that would amend the constitution to exempt the spouses of veterans killed in action from property tax obligations.
